7.       The top three ways to avoid identity theft are as follows:

Destroy papers you don't need: credit-card and ATM receipts, checks or deposit slips, health insurance benefit statements, paycheck stubs, tax records and preapproved credit-card offers. Buy a shredder and use it.

Do not carry your Social Security number with you, never give it out unless absolutely necessary    and do not have it printed on your checks.

Check your credit report each year. Investigate any accounts you did not apply for directly. To check your credit, contact one of the three major agencies: TransUnion 800-888-4213 (www.tuc.com), Experian 888-EXPERIAN (www.experian.com), or Equifax 800-685-1111 (www.equifax.com). There is a fee for this service.

8.       Amazon vs. Barnes and Noble

www.amazon.com has a very professional and easy to use interface.  Not only does amazon.com carry but it also carries everything under the kitchen sink.  From kitchen stuff to DVD’s to toys, Amazon.com has it all.  They have also seemed to develop some partnerships with well-known brick and mortar stores such as Target and Toy R Us.  Checking out seems very with the option of checking out in one step.    Amazon.com even provides recommendation for items you may like based on previous purchases.  Shipping however seems high unless you spend $99.00 or more. There they have a free shipping offer in place. The entire site is a very excellent and easy to navigate site.  No wonder they are number one when it comes to internet shopping.

Barnes and Noble or www.bn.com is basically the Internet version of the Barnes and Noble chain of bookstores.  Yes they do carry Dvds and Cd’s but their main focus is books.  Their selection of books is quite expansive and they even offer an option to search for out of print books, which can be helpful to find those elusive books.  Their prices overall seem high but they offer free shipping when you buy a few items.  Unfortunately they charge sales tax to my home state, New Jersey, which may deter me from buying here if the main issue was price.  A great site but still far behind but www.amazon.com is much more powerful website.

10.  An activity run by Campus Ministry that sounds interesting is Balloon Day.  Balloon Day has a two-fold purpose to raise money for the poor in the Philadelphia area while bringing the Villanova Community together for fun and appreciation of springtime.  This festival involves approximately 2,000 people and is one of the few events at Villanova that involves the entire University Community.

11.  a. We examine four areas of rapid technology development that exploit the capabilities of interactive e-channels: Web-based self-service, data mining, personalization and e-cash.

E-Cash. While making credit card payments over the Web has not turned out to be the "show-stopper" that many expected, e-businesses addressing the consumer space will need to improve customer trust and the online convenience of payments for mass adoption. Early e-cash offerings (e.g., from CyberCash or Qpass) focus on the user setting up an account or providing credit card information to provide the source of the funds. A new generation of payment schemes (e.g., Trivnet) are looking at using relationships that users have already established — e.g., with their Internet service provider (ISP) or phone company — to form the basis of the billing mechanism. This may finally expand the potential revenue sources for e-retailers down into the micropayment arena as institutions such as the phone companies already have mechanisms in place for aggregating and billing for numerous small transactions

b.  From the April 19, 2001, Hartford Courant:  In its first quarter as a combined company, AOL Time Warner Inc. posted a net loss of $1.37 billion on investment write-downs and other costs Wednesday, but revenue and cash earnings rose. The company reaffirmed its aggressive growth targets for the year.    The net loss of 31 cents a share compared with a net loss of $1.46 billion, or 34 cents, a year earlier, when the company had an accounting charge of $443  million to comply with rules for the carrying value of film inventories. The year-earlier results were calculated as if the companies were combined a year
earlier.

14. a. The author of personal technology is Walter S. Mossberg.  The two devices featured in the December 21, 2000 article were the Philips Expanium and the Pine D'music SM-200C.  There were problems with both models. The D'music skips in my MP3-CDs and, in some cases, it played five or 10 seconds of static before starting a song.  While the Philips model didn’t display any song information, making navigation hard. Its overall feel is flimsy and its controls were a little clumsy.
